Puttu - Steam Cake

Here goes the recipe of my husband's favourite break fast ... Puttu. This is so easy to make that whenever I find very less time with me in the morning, a Puttu will be steaming in the kitchen :)

Ingredients
1. Rice powder
2. Grated coconut
3. Salt
4. Water

The utensil required - Puttu Maker

The lower bulkier portion is where the water for steaming is stored. The upper detachable leaner portion which is separated from lower portion with perforated lids so as to allow the steam to pass through and bake the rice powder which has been filled. The upper portion of the leaner section is covered with a perforated cup shaped lid once it is filled with rice powder.

How to make?

1. Take a plate which is wide and shallow.
2. Pour rice powder and add enough salt and mix it well.
3. Pour some water and mix the rice powder well. Please take care to keep the same consistency.
4. Rice powder should maintain its powder form even after adding water. For this mix very well after you add water each time.
5.Take the leaner portion of puttu maker. Keep the sieve. Now fill it with the mixed rice powder. It should be filled in such a way that the rice powder is loosely packed in it. This allows steam to travel through the rice powder and cook it well. After filling half of the vessel, add grated coconut and complete filling by the remaining rice powder.
6. Pour water in the bulkier portion of puttu maker. Maintain half level water.
7. Fix the leaner portion of vessel onto this and keep it on the flames.
8. Take the vessel out once you see the steam coming out of the vessel continuously for couple of minutes.
9. Take out the leaner portion carefully and push the puttu(rice cake) out of the vessle using a spoon.

Team this with boiled green gram / papad. Your break fast is ready!
