Kadala Curry - Chickpeas Curry

Puttu and Kadala Curry is a classic breakfast combination in Kerala . However, I have it as my dinner also. Puttu preparation is already explained in one of my previous posts. For now, let's focus on Kadala curry :)

Ingredients

  1. Kadala /Chana/ Chickpeas. - Soak this overnight.
  2. Grated Coconut.
  3. Big Onion - chopped.
  4. Garlic
  5. Curry Leaves
  6. Dry Red Chilly
  7. Urad Dal
  8. Mustard Seeds
  9. Oil
  10. Turmeric Powder
  11. Red Chilly Powder
  12. Coriander Powder

How to Make?
  1. Cook Kadala with salt, chopped onion and garlic. This should be well-cooked.
  2. Heat a pan and add a little bit of oil, add mustard seeds, urad dal, dried red chilly and curry leaves.
  3. Once urad dal and mustard seeds starts splattering, add turmeric powder, red chilly powder and coriander powder. Let it fry well and do not get it burnt!
  4. Now add grated coconut, fry it till the raw smell goes off.
  5. Now add the cooked Kadala and use the left over water used to cook it. Adjust the amount of water based on how much gravy one needs.
  6. Close the pan and cook it for 5- 10 minutes in low flame.
