Vazhakka Bajji - Deep Fried Plantain Wedges

This is a week of Cyclones. Sandy in East Coast US and Nilam in South India. This has also affected other parts of India with non stop shower and the chaos that follows like traffic jams and power cuts!
The cloudy atmosphere and continuous drizzle did dampen my spirits too in the kitchen. But, by evening my husband came up with a cute request that, he needs to eat something hot and crunchy and said we should take advantage of such weather. Sweetened words I would say.. but, as usual I fell for it happily.

I had got one raw plantain (Vazhakka)left in the fridge, so what's better way than using it for a Bajji.

Ingredients

  1. Raw Plantain
  2. Gram Flour (Besan)
  3. Turmeric - a pinch
  4. Salt
  5. Cumin Seeds
  6. Red Chilly Powder - a pinch
  7. Oil
How to Make ?
  1. Remove the plantain's peel. Keep a bit of its inner cover, it will be crunchy after frying and also has some fiber :)
  2. Cut the plantain into half and slice into thin pieces.
  3. Mix ingredients from #2 till #6 with water and keep aside for 10 minutes.
  4. Mix plantain pieces with flour.A thin coating of the flour should form on the plantain.
  5. Heat oil in a pan and drop plantain one by one and take it out once it is golden yellow.

Enjoy this with a hot tea /coffee. Helps you to raise your spirits! ;)
